History

The Hellenic Golf Federation was founded in 1981. There are presently seven golf clubs that are full members of the Federation: The Glyfada Golf Club, the “Athina” Ladies Golf Club of Greece, the Attikos Golf Club for Seniors, the Afandou Rodos Golf Club, the Porto Carras Golf Club, the Corfu Golf Club and the Afandou 2002 Golf Club.

In 1964 Greece’s first 18-hole golf course was opened in the Athenian coastal suburb of Glyfada. In the 1950’s two 9-hole courses were created in Agios Kosmas which is located near the old International Airport at Hellinikon and in Varibobi which is located on the main highway north of Athens. These two 9-hole courses no longer exist.

Today, Greece has five 18-hole golf courses: the first is situated in Glyfada south of Athens, the Corfu Golf course on the island of Corfu, the Afandou Golf Course located on the island of Rhodes, the Porto Carras golf course and resort located on the Halkidiki Peninsula south of Thessaloniki, and the newly opened Crete Golf Course which is located near the city of Iraklion on the island of Crete. Crete has also a 9-hole course (par 3) at the Elounda Mare Resort Hotel Complex.
